Geneva … in the countryside

Geneva is not only a city. Almost one half of the canton is still given over to agriculture. Its green belt of 12,000 hectares, split into 400 agricultural operations, allows for local agriculture.

Wines, arboriculture, horticulture and market gardening dominate. The canton of Geneva is overflowing with authentic and original farm products :

  • fine wines, notably from the Mandement and Russin regions.
  • the large prickly silver cardoon, a trademarked vegetable traditionally served at Christmas and for the Escalade.
  • the longeole, a typical Geneva sausage.

Cattle rearing is strong. At Genthod you can buy bio meat directly from the producer, while at Collex, you can find … bison steaks, raised on the local prairies. Everything you need for a tasty barbecue!

The greenbelt also affords walks in the nature, just two steps away from the city, through agricultural zones and in well-prepared woodland.

On the occasion of UEFA’s EURO 2008, Geneva’s farmers would like to welcome visitors to the Fan Zone at their stand in the Plaine de Plainpalais so that they can discover the treasures of their soil. For more information: www.opage.ch

Under the fountain : the beaches

Geneva is a city where we like to get wet! With a lake, rivers and, above all, swimming pools, everything is right for a dip as soon as the sun deigns to show her face. There are lots of well appointed open-air Olympic-size pools. The nearest to the Fan Zone and the Fan Camp are those of Vernets (also a covered pool), Carouge and Lancy. Not forgetting the lake itself, with Geneva Beach (Genève-Plage) and its chute, its beaches without pools, though well-loved by the people of Geneva: Baby Plage on the Left Bank (Rive Gauche) and the Bains de Pâquis, one of the most ‘in’ places of the city on the Right Bank (Rive Droite).

It is also possible to rent motor boats, rowing boats, yachts or pedalos.
For information contact the ports at Pâquis and Eaux-Vives.

For the more sportive there is the descent of the Rhone by raft. With guide and security.

Finally the trips on the Lake and the Rhone, with the CGN or the “Mouettes Genevoises” motor boats are really worthwhile excursions. With fauna and ecological strolls in the meanders of the Rhone, visits to patrician homes or dinner-dances on the lake, there is something for everyone.

Museums

Geneva has over 40 museums covering the most varied domains and housing rich collections. As it could cause jealousy to mention only a few, such as the Natural History, the Art and History, the Contemporary Arts (MAMCO) or the Barbier Müller museums, it would be better to consult the full list
