Driving to Plainpalais

The plaine de Plainpalais is housing the Fan Zone, the meeting point and festive rendez-vous for visitors to EURO 2008 and Geneva residents alike. For reasons of security, traffic will be restricted on the evenings where the crowds will be heavy.

Traffic restrictions

Traffic deviations are planned at the end of the day so as to free up the roads bordering the square of the Plainpalais.
In the case of very heavy crowds, the entire “plaine” and its streets will be closed to traffic (avenue du Mail, avenue H.-Dunant, boulevard G.-Favon, rue H.-Marc).
Such will likely be the case on the evenings of the 3 Geneva matches, which coincide with the Swiss matches being played in Basle and transmitted free-of-charge on a giant screen in the Fan Zone. i.e. Saturday 7th June, Wednesday 11th June and Sunday 15th June.

Public transport

All the TPG bus lines which serve Plainpalais will be maintained on the normal route, with increased services from 3 p.m to midnight.

Access by tram:

  • from the Cornavin station in 8 minutes (lines 13, 14, 15)

  • from the stadium using the Bachet stop in 15 minutes (lines 12, 13, 14)

  • from the stadium using the P+R Etoile stop in 7 minutes (lines 15, 17)

A free shuttle will circulate every day from 7 p.m to midnight (to 2 a.m friday and saturday night) between the Fan Zone and the Fan Village at the Bout-du-Monde sports centre, where campers will be housed.

For the return journey, the Geneva Noctambus network will run 12 lines from midnight to 2.00 a.m (4.20 a.m friday and saturday night)

The Swiss Railways (CFF) are putting on extra trains to ensure return trips throughout Switzerland after every match.

All night services will charge the usual rates, without supplements. Do not hesitate to consult the Geneva Public Transport (TPG) and the Railway (CFF) sites

Two-wheelers

Parking facilities for two-wheelers will be increased round the Plainpalais.
Only bicycles will have access to organised spaces directly on the Plainpalais.
Parking for motor bikes and scooters is planned round the University buildings (Mail, Dufour, Bastions)

Car Parks

Given that the available parking is already totally saturated on a normal basis by local residents and that further parking is not planned, visitors to the Fan Zone are strongly recommended to arrive on foot or by public transport.
Entrances and exits to the Plainpalais car park will remain open, but disruptions to traffic are to be foreseen.
There are P+R parks on the outskirts of the city with bus connections to the centre of the city, from where Plainpalais can easily be reached on foot or by tram (lines 12, 13, 14, 15, 17).
