GENEVA, CENTER OF EXCELLENCE
FOR LASTING DEVELOPMENT

The
spirit of the Red Cross has inspired others : in June 1993 the headquarters
of the International Green Cross (IGC) was inaugurated in the Geneva suburb
of Conches, with the aim of promoting the wellbeing of peoples and protection
of the environment based on the long-term outlook and on lasting development.
Nature in all its varied and fruitful aspects is a permanent concern in
Geneva, which is also proud to host the European Office of the United Nations
Environment Program (UNEP) and several essential secretariats dealing with
toxic substances and circulation of waste materials, and the safeguarding
of wild fauna and flora. And as regards cooperation, while the United Nations
Development Program (UNDP) is the most important organization located in
Geneva, the United Nations Social Development Research Institute (UNSDRI)
and the Panafrican Development Institute are pursuing the same aims.
