There is always plenty going on in Geneva. The numerous theatres, concert hall, cinemas and museums offer a broad cultural spectrum to the inhabitants. With the Fêtes de Genève and many other festivals, both international and purely local, all ages are catered for, and during the summer many events take place outdoors in beautiful settings, such as the Garden Theatre and the Parc de l'Orangerie.
While the primary sector only accounts for 1,2 % of jobs in the canton of Geneva, the rural communities actively vie with each other to provide quality products. Grains and vegetables are the main crops, and the canton produces excellent local wines. Geneva has a long tradition of printing and watchmaking trades. But to meet the new demands of the modern world, the local industry has had to diversify. Today the greater part of the 17,9 % of the active population occupied in the secondary sector work for companies at the forefront of progress in the fields of engineering, micro-engineering, electrical engineering and the chemical industry. Above all Geneva has an efficient tertiary sector which accounts for 80,9 % of jobs in the canton. The various types of service industries involved are highly international in character : banking and finance, import-export, commerce, insurance, hotels and research, not forgetting of course all the activities connected with the United Nations and the European headquarters of multinational firms.
