The “Depuis 1960 seulement! L’histoire du suffrage féminin genevois en affiches” is back this summer!

On 6 March 2020, we celebrated the 60th anniversary of women gaining the right to vote and to stand for office in the Canton of Geneva. To mark the occasion, an exhibition retracing the history of this long struggle was organised and opened to the public. It is returning this summer for the 50th anniversary of women’s suffrage being granted at federal level 1971.

In 1960, following in the wake of Vaud and Neuchâtel, Geneva became the third Swiss canton to introduce women’s suffrage after five votes on the issue. This exposition offers you the chance to (re)discover the history of this struggle through the posters for the different campaigns, contrasting the arguments, opinions and demands of those in favour and against. These posters also reflect the stereotypes and representations of the role of women in society at a time…not so long ago!

Already presented in March 2020 as part of Gender Equality Week in the City of Geneva, the exhibition entitled “Depuis 1960 seulement! L’histoire du suffrage féminin genevois en affiches” is returning this summer to celebrate the 50th anniversary of women gaining the right to vote and to stand for office at federal level in 1971 after two votes. Focusing on the struggle in Geneva, this exhibition also presents examples of posters deployed during the federal election campaigns.

This exhibition is the fruit of a partnership between the Agenda 21-Sustainable City service of the City of Geneva, Geneva Library and the Office for the Promotion of Equality and the Prevention of Violence (BPEV) of the Canton of Geneva. The texts of the exhibition were prepared by the historian Sonia Vernhes Rappaz, while the archive research and graphic design was conducted by Madame Paris - Alexandra Ruiz.

Adaptation in video format

A video has been created in collaboration with the SIG - Industrial Services of Geneva. Entitled “Depuis 1960 seulement!”, it revisits these posters and the stereotypes they conveyed at the time.

Brochure in printed and digital format

On 14 June 2020, the City of Geneva published a brochure dedicated to the exhibition in both printed and digital format in order to give everyone the chance to (re)discover this exhibition. It showcases the posters of the different voting campaigns as well as a number of historical analysis texts, including the original text by Irène Herrmann, Professor of Transnational Swiss History at the University of Geneva.

The printed brochures can be ordered from the Agenda 21-Sustainable City service of the City of Geneva by e-mail: @email. It is also available for download below.
