In 2022, the Museums of Geneva want to foster discussion!

On the occasion of the artgenève fair, the Museums of Geneva are joining forces to present their highlights of 2022 after two years of silence due to the health situation. The new museum season is characterised by numerous approaches, diverse themes and a plethora of offerings reflecting the vitality of the private and public institutions in Geneva.

It is with this constantly renewed desire that the museums aim to give meaning, facilitate dialogue, sharing and reflection and invite the public to participate in the major societal debates.

The large temporary exhibitions encourage the public to call on their emotions, feel a sense of amazement or question themselves with regard to major societal issues. We can therefore note the inestimable contribution of the Botanical Conservatory and Gardens or the Museum of Geneva to questions of environmental protection and the fight against climate change. The MEG - Musée d’ethnographie de Genève fuels reflections on cultural appropriation, while the role of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum in remembering and resolving global conflicts is clearly crystallised.

Multiple themes and eras

The offer of the museums of Geneva also means multiple themes and eras, for example with the representation of rock scenes through the photographs of Dany Gignoux presented by the Bibliothèque de Genève, the discovery of Dante and his era at the Bodmer Foundation, Japanese prints (1860-1890) at the Baur Foundation and, of course, the discovery of the work of the only woman in the Concrets zurichois group, Verena Loewensberg, at the MAMCO. The MAH offers a fresh perspective on its collection.

The Museums of Geneva also serve up varied materials and colours, with the exhibition Bling at the Musée de Carouge, the “Ecarts et correspondances” at the Musée Barbier-Mueller et Jacques Kauffmann and the palette of Hubert Crevoisier presented at the Musée Ariana.

2022 also marks the FMAC, or the City’s Contemporary Art Fund, joining the Museums of Geneva with the opening, in May, of a new exhibition space dedicated to its collection, located at the heart of the Jonction eco-district. The FMAC is also a veritable open-air museum with more than 300 works presented in the public sphere. During the autumn, the International Museum of the Reformation will reopen its doors after more than one year’s work, with a brand new exhibition in its renovated rooms.

Being at the heart of societal subjects

Participating in the discussion is also the role of cultural institutions! With the desire to open themselves more to their public and to be at the heart of societal subjects, the Museums of Geneva are launching the “Ça se discute” campaign. Addressing futile, relevant, disturbing or light-hearted questions, they invite us to talk, to develop our critical thinking, awaken our curiosity, cultivate or question our convictions... And through their knowledge, their collections and their programmes, the Museums of Geneva fuel these discussions.

By developing these joint actions, such as the “Le Musée des charmes” conference given by Jean-Hubert Martin as part of artgenève, or the “Nuit des musées” which will be held on 21 May 2022, the Museums of Geneva are intensifying their collaboration to make Geneva a renowned museum hub.
