The City of Geneva stands up against racism

The 2021 edition of Anti-racism Week in the City of Geneva, organised by the Agenda 21 - Sustainable City Service, will take place between 20 and 28 March. A series of activities appropriate to the public health situation is being arranged by different services of the City of Geneva in partnership with the voluntary sector to combat racism.

The 2021 edition of Anti-racism Week in the City of Geneva, which will take place between 20 and 28 March alongside International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, will be held digitally.

The current situation caused by Covid-19 and the public health, economic and social consequences this is having could shift the fight against racism onto the back burner. That would be to forget that the crisis has given rise to a whole range of racist conspiracy theories and allowed a resurgence of xenophobic hate speech against different parts of the population.

Aware of this reality, the City of Geneva is more committed than ever to opposing racism. Alfonso Gomez, Administrative Councillor responsible for equality and diversity, emphasises that “at times of crisis, fundamental rights and social progress are often thrown into doubt. Public authorities have to step up their efforts to ensure social cohesion and living together in harmony.”

Online programme 2021

The highlights of the programme include two online round tables examining the impact of the international demonstrations triggered by the death of African-American George Floyd, choked to death by a white policeman while on his knees, and the discussions these opened up about tributes paid in the public space to people who encouraged racism and colonialism.

The first round table, organised by the Agenda 21 - Sustainable City Service, will consider the approaches and actions that can be taken to deal with this issue. The second, organised by the municipal libraries, will investigate in more detail how scientists from Geneva and French-speaking Switzerland played a part in elaborating theories of racial inequality and how their role in public memory has been called into question over time.

“Servette against Racism” is an event that brings together a broad coalition of players in the institutional and voluntary sectors and is planning a discussion of racism during Covid-19. With support from the appeal to projects against anti-black racism launched by the city in 2020, podcast producer The Spot in collaboration with the Agenda 21 - Sustainable City Service and the Cultural Service, will be putting on a special one-off edition of the broadcast Afro Stories dedicated to Genevan artists of African heritage.
