The City joins forces with Zero Waste Switzerland to promote Zero Waste reflexes

To reduce our environmental footprint, it is essential not only to recycle but also to reduce the volume of waste we produce on a daily basis. In March 2020, four videos presenting Zero Waste tips will be posted on the social networks. Anyone interested in learning more can visit the City’s website or take part in a workshop.

Zero Waste - encourager les démarches Zéro Déchet

The environmental burden of the local inhabitants’ consumption is heavy, in particular in terms of carbon emissions. The City of Geneva therefore takes action in several areas with a view to reducing the environmental footprint of the waste produced within its territory. Beyond the daily work of the street cleaning service, the provision of the waste collection sites with a view to recycling reusable materials, the distribution of the little green dustbin and anti-littering campaigns, several initiatives specifically target waste reduction at the source.

These include the recent ban on single-use plastics in public areas and within the services and institutions operated by the City (administrative offices, schools, cultural and sports facilities), support for groceries selling loose products (Le Nid and Le Bocal local) via the G’innove Programme and the "Ge répare" directory listing the addresses of repair shops within the city, developed over several years in collaboration with the Fédération romande des consommateurs (FRC), which now includes the addresses of more than 200 repair operatives who can extend the useful life of numerous objects.

Today, the City of Geneva presents its partnership with the association Zero Waste Switzerland (ZWS, Geneva branch). Four video clips have been produced in order to show the population what a Zero Waste reflex is in the fields of food, hygiene, travel and festivities. Each video presents a number of tips for reducing waste, inviting anyone watching to visit www.geneve.ch/zerodechet in order to learn more or to take part in the ZWS Zero Waste workshops (in French and English) subsidised by the City and held in la Jonction. It is better that a large number of people adopt a few good daily reflexes than a small number of people doing everything perfectly!
