COVID-19: the measures taken by the City of Geneva to protect its staff and the public

In light of the new upsurge in the Covid-19 pandemic in Geneva and with a view to contributing to the efforts made to protect the City’s staff together with the public while maintaining the activity of the municipal administration, the Administrative Council has decided to adopt a number of new measures which took effect on Monday 26 October 2020 and will remain in force until further notice.

Obligation of wearing a mask in confined spaces belonging to the administration

Masks must now be worn in confined spaces belonging to the municipal administration – regardless of whether they are open to the public or not – including in vehicles belonging to the City and in premises open to the public and managed directly by the City.

Teleworking strongly encouraged

In line with the recommendations of the Federal Council, the Administrative Council encourages and promotes teleworking wherever possible. Several tools have been developed for this purpose. If teleworking is not possible, the protective measures must be scrupulously respected.

Postponement of events

Also with the aim of protecting both the City’s staff and the public, the Administrative Council has decided to postpone all visits to municipal infrastructures not open to the public by groups of people from outside the administration (school classes, members of associations, etc.) as well as celebratory events (leaving parties, end-of-year meals and parties, etc.) organised by the staff of the municipal administration.

Increased disinfection of premises and objects

The Administrative Council has also decided to increase the disinfection of premises and objects within the municipal administration, adopting the same frequency and intensity as in spring 2020.

Sports infrastructures

Finally, the Administrative Council informs the public that new health measures enacted by the State Council, which came into effect on Monday 26 October in all the infrastructures of the City of Geneva, limit the possibilities of engaging in certain sporting activities:

  • team sports, contact sports and combat sports are prohibited;
  • individual sports are authorised, but changing rooms are closed;
  • the swimming pools in les Vernets and Varembé will remain open;
  • the local pools (Chandieu, Liotard, Pâquis, Contamines) are closed as they do not have individual changing rooms;
  • visitors are required to disinfect their hands upon entering sports facilities;
  • masks must be worn in all sports facilities except during the sporting activity.
