8th edition of the “Early Childhood in the City of Geneva: context and indicators” brochure

The 8th edition of the “Early Childhood in the City of Geneva: context and indicators” brochure is now available. Developed by the sociologists of the Early Childhood Service, this document provides an overview of the actions implemented by the City intended for pre-school children and their families.

Published every five years, this brochure presents the early childhood services provided by the municipality by means of an overview of the non-family childcare facilities subsidised by the City.

Two approaches highlighted

This eighth edition is divided into two sections. In a quantitative approach, the first section presents statistical indicators relating to the number of places and the demand for childcare, the human and financial resources in play and the characteristics of the families who make use of the care facilities. The resulting indicators represent an essential tool in planning and managing the early childhood sector. The second section provides a qualitative presentation of two specific aspects of the care provided. One relates to support within the care facilities for children with special educational needs while the other proposes assistance for parents who are interested and who have children of pre-school age.

Major issues

Analysis of these quantitative and qualitative data highlights the need for both the City and the Department of Social Cohesion and Solidarity to pursue their efforts to increase the number of places available, insofar as the supply is currently insufficient to meet the demand, and to re-examine the governance model in this sector.
