Japanese art gets pride of place in the new exhibition entitled “Surimono”. From 18 March to 21 August 2022.
Following on from the exhibition at the Museum of Art and History looking at kabuki in 2014, the institution is continuing to explore its collection of Japanese prints by way of a hundred or so of its surimono, luxuriously produced sheets presented at meetings, celebrations or to mark a grand occasion in Japan.
The MAH is fortunate in having a collection which includes many works on a large scale. The Surimono exhibition reveals Japanese cultural complexity through poetry, calligraphy and the way it depicts celebrations, the seasons and much more.
