A new food distribution operation intended for people experiencing terrible hardship will be organised on Saturday 30 May at les Vernets ice rink. The figures observed last weekend – 2,900 parcels distributed and 731 new families registered with les Colis du cœur – demonstrate the far-reaching consequences of the COVID-19 crisis.
This new distribution operation enjoys the active support of several services of the City of Geneva, which is coordinating the logistics of the operation and organizing the social hub on site.
A new appeal for donations has been launched in partnership with la Caravane de Solidarité, les Colis du cœur and the Partage Foundation. Anyone wishing to make a contribution can bring donations to les Vernets ice rink on Friday 29 May between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Worrying increase in hardship
On 23 May, 2,900 food parcels were distributed, representing 600 more than the previous weekend. This was made possible thanks to the exceptional contributions from 892 donors from all backgrounds, including hundreds of anonymous donors. Furthermore, 7311 new families were registered in the database run by les Colis du cœur.
Beyond this quite remarkable show of solidarity, however, the large number of beneficiaries highlights a worrying increase in hardship. A survey of 522 people conducted during the distribution operation organised on 2 May by MSF and the HUG confirms this observation. Almost half the respondents are women, primarily migrants with no legal status and facing serious problems of access to food, accommodation and healthcare.
29 May: a new appeal for donations
In light of this critical socio-health situation, the appeal for donations and the distribution operation will be renewed on 29 and 30 May 2020.
Many people want to get involved as volunteers.
Please note that the activity requires good physical condition and great capacity for empathy.
Anyone wishing to help can register as a volunteer at @email.
The staff of volunteers is coordinated by the Comédie.
Strong involvement of the City’s services
Several of the City of Geneva’s services are heavily involved in this distribution operation organised by the Caravane de Solidarité in partnership with les Colis du cœur and numerous private donors.
In particular, these services coordinate the operation, provide logistical support, organise the socio-health hub and implement of the communication plan:
- The Schools Service provides administrative support while coordinating and participating in the Colis du cœur registration process;
- The Social Service organises an information and social guidance stand in partnership with certain associations;
- The Sports Service makes the site in les Vernets available while also cleaning and managing the equipment;
- The Fire and Rescue Service ensures the presence of professional and volunteer firefighters;
- The Logistics and Events Service (LOM) provides and installs all the necessary equipment;
- Some 200 volunteers participate in the operation and are coordinated by les Amis de la Comédie.
30 May: food distribution operation from 8 a.m.
The next food distribution operation will take place on Saturday 30 May from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at les Vernets ice rink. The people coming to collect a parcel are registered in the Colis du cœur system, and the list of beneficiaries has already reached over 9,000 people. These people will subsequently receive a voucher at home with a value adapted to the size of the household.
In parallel to the operation organised to distribute food and hygiene products, social guidance is provided on site by the Social Service and the different associations offering assistance to undocumented persons and migrants.
As on previous Saturdays, a health service is also organised by the HUG, Médecins sans Frontières, the Sida Genève Group and the Family Planning Clinic.
A new distribution operation announced for Saturday 6 june.
Beyond the immediate social emergency, a think tank has also been launched with regard to the next steps open to the movement, and in particular to the recognition of the right to food and the social rights of all persons living within the territory.
