Decentralised food distributions: new schedule in the City

The distribution of food and hygiene products to people who have fallen foul of the covid-19 crisis will continue until 30 September 2020. Some times have been modified due to pupils returning to school. In the City, parcels are now distributed on Wednesdays at the Trembley and Hugo-de-Senger schools.

The municipalities of Carouge, Petit-Lancy, Thônex and Vernier-Meyrin are continuing to participate in the inter-municipal initiative coordinated by the Canton in partnership with the Partage Foundation, les Colis du Cœur and the local associations.

Scheduled to run until 30 September, these decentralised distribution operations are organised with the assistance of around one hundred volunteers, both in the City of Geneva and in the four municipalities concerned. The Colis du cœur website provides all necessary information in six languages, specifying the locations and times of these distribution operations according to the beneficiaries’ postcodes.

More than 2,500 parcels were distributed to families every week throughout the summer.

The different partners made a great effort and put in a great deal of work during the summer to meet the needs of those people who have fallen on hard times due to the Covid-19 crisis. Since the distribution operations in les Vernets were brought to an end on 7 June to be replaced by decentralised distributions, an average of 2,500 parcels have been distributed every week to more than 1,300 families.

During the distribution operation of 9 September, some 1,070 food parcels (dry products, eggs, fruit and vegetables) as well as 302 articles for babies (nappies and powdered milk) were offered to those in need at the Hugo-de-Senge school, while some 1,565 food parcels together with 458 articles for babies were distributed at the Trembley site.

Wednesday distributions at the Hugo-de-Senger and Trembley schools

Summer is drawing to a close, but the efforts of those concerned will continue. Nevertheless, the start of the new academic year means that certain changes will be made to the organisation of the distributions. For those people living in the City of Geneva (whose postcodes fall between 1201 and 1208), the next scheduled parcel distributions will continue to take place at the Hugo-de-Senger and Trembley schools. However, the two operations will take place on the same day, i.e. Wednesdays from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. until 30 September. For the next distribution operation on 16 September, 1,170 parcels have been prepared for the Hugo-de-Senger site and 1,570 for the Trembley site.

In the City of Geneva, the parcel service is complemented by a social presence provided by the City’s Social Service, the Hospice Général and the partner associations including EPER (Swiss protestant mutual aid) and APDH (association for the promotion of human rights).

Donors can consult the website of the Partage Foundation, which is now tasked with centralising donations.
