The French-speaking municipalities and cantons have a handy guide for implementing Agenda 2030

The association Coord21 publishes the “Practical Guide for Agenda 2030 in the Municipalities and Cantons”. This publication provides public bodies with the keys necessary to taking ownership of the sustainable development goals of Agenda 2030. A veritable toolbox, it facilitates the adaptation of this global and universal reference framework to local particularities. The guide suggests a course of action and provides a catalogue of tangible measures in favour of sustainable development. It enables the municipalities and cantons to initiate or revitalise their Agenda 2030 procedure.

Coordination agenda 2030

The members of the Coord21 association, including more than sixty French-speaking municipalities and cantons, have joined forces to draw up guidelines allowing Agenda 2030 to be adapted at local level. The result is the “Practical Guide for Agenda 2030 in the Municipalities and Cantons”. This publication enables the local authorities to ensure coherence both between their respective approaches and between their actions and international goals while nevertheless incorporating their own particularities. The guide was presented in Lausanne today by Ms Chiara Barberis, President of Coord21, in the presence of Ms Béatrice Métraux, State Councillor for Vaud and Deputy Head of the Department of Territorial and Environmental Affairs (DTE), and Ms Natacha Litzistorf, Municipal Councillor in Lausanne and Director of the Department of Housing, Architecture and the Environment (LEA).

A concerted effort

All the member states of the UN, including Switzerland, have undertaken to implement Agenda 2030 and its 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs). Due to its global scope, this reference framework may nevertheless appear somewhat abstract when transposed to the local level. Consequently, the municipalities and cantons wanted to define a common course of action in the form of the Coord21 guide. The publication helps implement 10 key themes: consumption and production; urban development, mobility and infrastructures; energy and climate; natural resources; the economic and financial system; education, research and innovation; social cohesion; social security; health; and governance and partnerships. Furthermore, the guide provides a rationale, a course of action and a catalogue of best practices. It is freely available in electronic format on the www.coord21.ch website (a printed version can also be ordered).

Ambitious goals

The association Coord21 firmly believes that encouraging the incorporation of sustainability into the actions of public bodies requires strong commitment from the political authorities. They alone can set ambitious goals designed to develop long-lasting infrastructures, provide reliable energy services, combat climate change, restore and protect ecosystems and reduce inequalities. The guide published today provides practical keys to achieve these objectives..
