“Genève en été”… reinvented!

The City of Geneva will organise a local cultural programme for this summer in Geneva. The Administrative Council wants to meet the expectations of the population while complying with the health standards in place and helping ensure that cultural stakeholders can return to work as soon as possible.

Having guaranteed that subsidies granted to the cultural sphere will be maintained and having committed to implementing mechanisms together with the cantonal and federal authorities designed to support the entire sector during this unprecedented crisis, the Department of Culture and Digital Transition (DCTN) intends to provide the necessary resources for a somewhat modified cultural scene: Sami Kanaan, mayor of Geneva responsible for culture, is pleased to announce that, “While major gatherings will be prohibited throughout the summer, we are currently exploring the possibility of organising a summer programme allowing inhabitants and visitors to the city to enjoy a summer cultural scene adapted to the current situation.”

On the one hand, some of the resources initially earmarked for the Fête de la musique and Musiques en été (485,000 francs) will be reassigned to enable the Cultural Service to organise a music programme in a different format involving local artists in different venues around the city.

On the other hand, in addition to the music programme, the City of Geneva has issued a call for projects, accompanied by a global budget of 300,000 francs. This initiative calls on the active participation of artists in every artistic discipline. The sums allocated can be as high as 20,000 francs per project. Projects developed as part of this tender must satisfy several objectives, in particular that of (re)creating a link between artists and the general public while promoting social diversity. It is also a question of exploring and experimenting with new formats and new venues connected to the health situation.

An allocation committee will examine applications and select those which best meet the given criteria. All conditions for participation are available online. In light of the situation and the short lead time, the conditions relating to the submission of projects have been simplified as far as possible.

The full summer cultural programme (concerts, performing arts, museums, libraries, visual arts) will be available in the online diary as well as on the “Genève en été” platforms (mobile apps & dedicated website).

The conditions for participation can be found under “Cultural summer 2020” call for projects
