International Museum Day

On Sunday 16 May 2021, more than 20 institutions in Geneva will take part in International Museum Day!  With the enthusiastic participation of public museums, private museums and art centres, the City of Geneva will organise a rich and varied programme of visits and activities for what is intended to be a federating and, more importantly, convivial event after so many months behind locked doors.

A fixture on the cultural calendar for over 40 years, International Museum Day this year involves more than 20 institutions in Geneva. The teams in each museum and art centre have been highly inventive in creating activities adapted to the different restrictions implemented to combat COVID-19. Together, they have developed a programme alternating indoor and outdoor events including guided visits, open visits, workshops and performances designed for visitors of every age. The museums will maintain their usual opening times, and access to the scheduled activities will be free of charge.

Filmed interviews

Focussing on the theme of “Museums as a source of inspiration for the future”, the aim of this year’s edition is to develop, imagine and share new means of (jointly) creating values as well as innovative solutions designed to overcome the social, economic and environmental challenges currently facing us. To this end, a series of heartfelt filmed interviews reveal the inspirations of the staff who make the museums what they are. These video clips can be discovered on the Museums of Geneva platform.

For a whole year now, the cultural institutions of the City of Geneva have repeatedly displayed great creativity throughout the crisis in order to maintain their ties with the public. “Culture is essential! As we navigate this period of unprecedented anxiety and uncertainty, cultural life plays a crucial role by offering solace, inspiration and hope. International Museum Day 2021 adheres to this principle,” stresses Sami Kanaan, Mayor of Geneva responsible for culture.

Seeds of curiosity & cultural pathways

Among the numerous thrusts emerging from the current situation, the Seeds of curiosity have flourished. Launched as part of International Museum Day and designed as a personal imaginative journey, this activity will be maintained throughout the summer. It complements the offerings of the Cultural pathways, each one an incentive to enjoy a pleasant summer stroll while discovering the history of Geneva’s heritage.
