Launch of a new call for projects against anti-black racism

For the second consecutive year, following the creation of a budget line totalling CHF 50,000 dedicated to combating anti-black racism, the Agenda 21 – Sustainable City Service has issued a call for projects with a view to addressing this problem. Projects can be submitted until 15 April 2021.

For a number of years, through its municipal policy fostering diversity, the City of Geneva has endeavoured to combat and dismantle the stereotypes and prejudices underpinning racism. In 2020, it was keen to strengthen its commitment to combating anti-black racism by issuing a call for projects, primarily intended for the relevant associations specialising in this domain. It subsequently supported the seven projects chosen to different degrees.

With the renewal of the budget line dedicated to this issue for 2021, the City of Geneva wishes to perpetuate this measure and is issuing a new call for projects. These projects must, in particular, provide a response to the issue of anti-black racism. The final submission date is 15 April 2021.

All-too-frequent discrimination

Discrimination against black people is one of the most widespread forms of racial discrimination in the world, once again brought so dramatically to the fore on 25 May 2020 by the death of George Floyd, the Afro-American man who died asphyxiated under the knee of a white policeman. Switzerland and Geneva have not been spared this phenomenon, as demonstrated by numerous national and cantonal reports on the issue. In 2019 in Geneva, anti-black racism was the form of discrimination most frequently reported to the counselling centre for victims of racism.
