Media support grant pilot project

Within its field of action, the Administrative Council wants to promote measures designed to create as many ties as possible between the media and their readership with a view to ensuring they are firmly rooted in the life of the city while providing high-quality information and fostering democratic debate. It is with this in mind that the City has launched a pilot project for grants intended to support the civic, cultural and pedagogical role of the media.

Based on the model of the independent bookshop support grants in place since 2013, a sum totalling 57,000 francs is made available to the professional media in the form of annual grants. Limited to 15,000 francs for this pilot project, these grants are intended for use in organising debates, themed meetings and any other relevant innovative pedagogical projects focussing on the role of information and the participation of the media.

This aid project alone does not presume to resolve the structural crisis currently facing the media, but is designed to help ensure that they are firmly rooted in the daily life of the city while also promoting their pedagogical contribution with regard to providing access to well-sourced and structured critical professional information and their essential participation in democratic debate. These grants can also be used to support projects aimed at developing new participatory digital media tools, thereby extending their contribution online.

The projects are selected by a jury consisting of three experts and two civil servants.

The application deadline is Tuesday 10 November 2020 and the conditions are specified on the City of Geneva media support grants page.

City of Geneva action plan in terms of media support

This pilot project is part of the broader City of Geneva action plan in terms of media support.

Presented in spring, it is intended to develop media support and accompaniment over time in order to help them overcome the structural crisis currently facing them. It is founded on very local measures (criteria for free distributors in public areas, development of announcements and purchases of services/target partnerships, support for subscriptions for young people, etc.).

The City has nevertheless undertaken to implement a broader action capable of providing a response to the systemic crisis in this field by federating the major cities and cantons of French-speaking Switzerland, in particular in partnership with the association Nouvelle Presse and the Pacte de l’enquête project.
