Nominees’ Week: seven days to discover the very best of Swiss cinema

On 26 March, the Swiss Cinema Awards will be presented at a ceremony held in Geneva behind closed doors. The 26 films in the running, all categories included, can be discovered from 22 to 28 March as part of Nominees’ Week.

While numerous Swiss cinema productions have not yet been screened in theatres or could not enjoy the exposure they deserved due to the global pandemic, and with cinema theatres still closed to the public, Nominees’ Week has been maintained in order to pay homage to these films selected for an online edition of the competition.

More specifically, the 26 films – including works of fiction, documentaries, animations and degree works – nominated in one of the twelve categories to obtain a Quartz will be streamed on the portal of the Cinémas du Grütli for French-speaking Switzerland and on the website www.filmpodium.ch for German-speaking Switzerland.

Each film will be accessible for 24 hours, according to the programme defined by the partner cinemas, at a flat rate of CHF 5 per film. The virtual tickets can be purchased online and the number of tickets is limited to 50 per film and per cinema. Once the winners of the Swiss Cinema Awards have been announced, the award-winning films will be screened again, free of charge, on the portals of the partner cinemas over the weekend of 27 and 28 March.

An awards ceremony streamed live

The Swiss Cinema Award will be presented at 8 p.m. on Friday 26 March in Geneva, live from studio 4 of RTS and broadcast on www.quartz.ch. It is held every year, alternating between Geneva and Zurich, and is awarded by the Federal Office of Culture. The Canton and the City of Geneva, together with the City of Zurich, support and organise this event via the association “Quartz” Geneva Zurich, chaired this year by Mr Thierry Apothéloz, State Councillor responsible for the Department of Social Cohesion.
