After the first edition held in 2016-17, Open End is once again holding an artistic event at the Cimetière des Rois, the resting place of numerous local personalities – from Calvin through Jeanne Hersch and Grisélidis Réal to Jean Piaget. The event is organised by the association DART, with the support of the Undertakers, Cemeteries and Crematorium Service.

Playwright Luca Depietri has created the narrative of the exhibition in this place of remembrance, revisited as the focal point for reflecting on a desperate search for certain forms of immortality and on the depletion of natural resources, constantly renegotiated by mankind.

Towards the future

For this second edition, Open End is resolutely turned towards the future, where new technologies take centre stage.

Under the banner of “Renegotiation”, the exhibition brings together fifteen works by renowned artists who question the challenges of our time. These works draw on techniques as varied as sculpture, artistic installation and virtual images visible via an app available to the public. They all sharpen our vision of funerary rituals and symbols as well as our ties to such a singular site as the cemetery.

According to Vincent Du Bois, member of DART and also an exhibitor, “Open End 2 presents the cemetery through the cracked mirror of our modern societies. The calm and silence of these places of remembrance offer a certain degree of hindsight with regard to the acceleration and constant din of progress.”

“An individual headlong rush or a collective work, the themes of the exhibition bring us face to face with our vulnerabilities and our collective commitment, forcing us to ponder the emergence of new rituals and our need for solidarity,” underlines Executive Councillor Christina Kitsos, responsible for the Department of Social Cohesion and Solidarity.

Open End 2 can be seen at the Cimetière des Rois until march 31, 2023.

To accompany your visit, a plan of the exhibition is available for download below along with the brochure presenting the works, which contains remarks from a range of personalities from numerous fields.
