In order to diversify the daycare facilities available for children aged 0 to 4, the City of Geneva operates two family nurseries: la Flottille in the district of les Eaux-Vives and la Pastourelle in the district of Saint-Jean. Pre-school children benefit from both care in the home of a childcare assistant and socialisation periods in the play area of a family nursery.
The City of Geneva provides more than 4,000 openings for families with preschool children in the different early childhood daycare facilities. With some 77 community nurseries within the municipal territory, this is the most common type of daycare facility.
A mixed service
Often less well known, family nurseries, or family daycare facilities, offer a quality alternative to community nurseries with regard to early childhood daycare. The advantage of this type of care is that it offers a mixed service.
Children spend most of their time in the welcoming environment of a daycare assistant’s home, with between 2 and 4 children accepted at any one time. Between one and three times a week, the children also visit the play area of the family nursery, accompanied by the daycare assistant, to spend time socialising with other children. The activities in the play area are organised by early childhood educators.
At present, two family nurseries offer this type of service within the municipality:
- La Pastourelle in the district of Saint-Jean, which has 20 assistants and can host up to 74 children on a full-time or part-time basis;
- La Flottille in the district of les Eaux-Vives, which has 20 assistants and can host up to 60 children on a full-time or part-time basis;
The children are accepted from the end of maternity leave until they start school, with a range of different subscriptions available. Registrations are handled centrally by the Early Childhood Information Office (BIPE). The fees are set according to the scale in force in the nurseries subsidised by the City of Geneva.
