Reopening of the public beach in les Eaux-Vives

Summer is going into overtime with the opening of the XXL beach in les Eaux-Vives: 400 metres of beach, two hectares of lawn next to a nature area, sixty trees, changing rooms and toilets open to the public from 22 August – a vast bathing and relaxation area at the heart of the city.

After a partial opening to the public in 2019, the public beach in les Eaux-Vives will be fully open from 22 August 2020, subject to any changes to the current health situation.

With the closure of the site in March and a limited resumption of work two months later, activity was primarily focused on the buildings (restaurant, Maison de la Pêche), conveniences such as the toilets, benches, installations for handicapped people and finishings.

A vast oasis at the heart of the city

Compared to last year’s reduced configuration, the new version of the beach is on a much larger scale: with its well-kept lawns, the park provides a vast relaxation area, rounded off with a final spit of sand and pebbles which was inaccessible in 2019. In total, there are 400 metres of beach and two hectares of parkland forming an oasis of calm at the very heart of the city.

Nature area

Walkers can also marvel at the wonderful sights on show in the nature area. It is home to numerous lake-dwelling species such as red-crested pochards, swans and coots which take advantage of an ideal habitat to raise their young. To protect this sensitive environment, the Land Planning Department of the State of Geneva would like to remind visitors that it is prohibited to enter, bathe or let their dog swim within this area.

Restaurant and refreshment bar

Due to the delay in work related to COVID-19, the opening of the Eaux-Vives Beach restaurant & refreshment bar is postponed to 2021.
