The second edition of Festi’Terroir will be held in Parc des Bastions on Saturday 5 September 2020 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday 6 September 2020 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Due to the health crisis, this year’s event will focus on its flagship activity: a large-scale market for producers, craftsmen and winemakers at the very heart of Geneva.
The fruit of a collaboration between the association BioGenève, the Office for the Promotion of Agriculture in Geneva (Genève Terroir) and the City of Geneva, this event is a unique opportunity to meet those involved in supplying Geneva’s local products.
Dried herbs, syrups and honeys from the region rub shoulders with long-forgotten varieties of vegetable as well as wine specialities and baked goods. Numerous associations active in the field of sustainable agriculture and responsible consumption will also be present on site to talk about their activities. The concerts, round tables, brunch and workshops originally planned have nevertheless been cancelled.
Promoting local produce
The tremendous popularity of local agricultural produce observed during the period of confinement would appear to have fallen away considerably with a return to usual consumption habits. The exceptional circumstances of spring 2020 nevertheless turned the spotlight on local trade and production more than ever before, illustrating the essential role they play in the supply chain.
“Be it with a view to supporting the local economy, protecting the environment or simply just having a better idea of what we are eating, it is essential to maintain this momentum for local products,” explains Mark Jan-du-Chêne, Project Manager at Genève-Terroir. According to Administrative Councillor Alfonso Gomez, responsible for sustainable development in the City of Geneva, “The health crisis reminded us of the importance of food sovereignty. City-dwellers must have access to high-quality, locally-sourced food as well as new, eco-friendly production, processing and distribution methods. That is precisely what Festi’Terroir promotes.” Finally, Grégoire Stoky, Joint President of BioGenève, reiterates that “the area of land dedicated to organic farming is constantly growing in Geneva and this event is the perfect opportunity for producers to present their products and trades and to develop ties with the urban population.”
