Start of redevelopment work on Place des Augustins

A new, green area will replace the current, somewhat dilapidated site, transforming the square into a pleasant and convivial centre of community life. With the completion of this keenly anticipated redevelopment project, Place des Augustins will be able to assume its role as a place where the local population can meet and relax.

Place des Augustins has long been in need of a face lift. Ideally situated between rue de Carouge and rue Prévost-Martin, it forms a greatly appreciated open space between these two busy shopping streets. The somewhat motley and dilapidated environment will soon be the scene of a high-quality redevelopment project which will offer a pleasant means of moving around the neighbourhood while also encouraging people to stop and take a break.

Covering almost 2,000 m², this area will therefore be able to play its role to the full as a place where people can relax as well as providing a pleasant crossroads between the different cafés, shops and points of interest in the surrounding area. Work began in September 2020 and will be completed in April 2021.

An oasis at the heart of the neighbourhood

A light-coloured consolidated gravel surface will cover the entire square, replacing the current asphalt concrete and cobblestones. Around the perimeter, the pavements will be completely renovated and a small esplanade will be created in front of the Ifage building.

Five new trees and several beds of shrubs will be added to the existing vegetation. All the existing trees will be retained except one – deemed to present a risk during a recent inspection and which has already seen some branches fall accidentally.

An asymmetric pool and fountain will occupy the centre of the square, adding to the conviviality of the site. A new drinking fountain will allow passers-by to quench their thirst. Urban furnishings will also be installed along with new public lighting.

This redevelopment will thus bring together a number of different elements which help create pleasant oases in the city, in particular light-coloured surfaces, permeable ground, plants and water.

Renovated in 2015, the former tram stop is earmarked for future activity which will contribute to life on the square. It also houses public toilets which will remain open during the work..

A redevelopment project designed by landscape architects at the beginning of their career

In 2014, the City of Geneva organised a redevelopment competition for landscape architects under the age of 35. The Zurich-based company S2L was named the winner, receiving the “Evariste-Mertens” prize awarded by the FSAP (Swiss Federation of Landscape Architects).
