Surge in telephone scams

The Municipal Police of the City of Geneva and the Cantonal Police feel it is necessary to warn senior citizens. Since January 2021, the police forces have recorded an increase in telephone scams, in particular targeting senior citizens.

The victims are contacted by people speaking fluent French and posing as employees of the Cantonal Tax Administration or another cantonal administration.

The con artist explains to his/her victim that they are in arrears with regard to their tax or other payments and that they have received too much money from the OASI. Once the con artist has succeeded in convincing his/her victim of this, he/she attempts to have the victim pay him/her the amount due, either in cash or by obtaining the victim’s bank details.

The police would like to remind everyone that they should never communicate any personal, bank or postal details and never pay any sum of money after receiving a telephone call of this type.

If you are, or have been, the victim of a telephone scam, notify the Cantonal Police immediately by dialling 117, the Robbery Squad of the Judicial Police on 022 427 72 60 or the Municipal Police of the City of Geneva on 022 418 22 22.
