Work to make the Varembé indoor swimming pool safe began on 30 January so that it can reopen in summer 2023.
July 2022 saw the City of Geneva obliged to close Varembé pool with immediate effect for safety reasons. Following the closure, further investigations were carried out involving the entire structure of the building, in order to assess its overall condition and to identify the work needed. This allowed an intervention strategy to be put in place and a call for tenders to be launched.
Major work
The work, which began on 30 January 2023, includes:
- Removing and replacing all existing false ceilings with acoustic panels;
- Installing acoustic stretched textiles;
- Reinforcing a number of structural steel elements (columns and beams);
- Removing the glazing and locks of the glass roof, which will be removed;
- Replacing the fixings supporting various technical elements (ventilation ducts, cable conduits, light fittings, etc.);
- Checking and upgrading the electrical installations affected by the works.
Reopening
The work is expected to take approximately six months, which should allow the pool to reopen in summer 2023. Due to the presence of construction site machinery and the need for access to the works, Varembé outdoor swimming pool will remain closed to the public until the indoor pool reopens.
As a consequence of the closure of the Varembé pools, the Vernets swimming pool’s opening hours have been extended – from 22 August 2022 until Varembé reopens.
The current temporary opening hours of the Vernets swimming pool are:
- Monday: 8 am to 10 pm (new)
- Tuesday: 7 am to 10 pm (new)
- Wednesday: 7 am to 8 pm
- Thursday: 7 am to 8 pm
- Friday: 7 am to 10 pm
- Saturday: 7 am to 7 pm
- Sunday: 9 am to 7 pm
