Henry Purcell, Dido and Æneas
During the 1680s, there was more stability in England at the musical helm than on the throne! In these circumstances, with modest means, Purcell composed Dido and Aeneas, his only opera. In place of the usual grandeur of the genre, Purcell substituted density: the political and relational intrigues associated with Dido disappeared, and the story revolved around the love life of the queen and founder of Carthage. She reveals her emotional depths, her inner self shattered by a love she can only give up by giving up everything. From the heroine praised by certain Renaissance writers for adopting so-called masculine qualities or for her chastity, she becomes the irresistible echo of our despair in love.
