Family nurseries offer a high-quality alternative to group nurseries for very young children. Children enjoy an individual welcome and care in the home of a family nursery assistant while benefiting from group childcare at the family nursery.

A mixed service
A family nursery means children are welcomed into the warm, family environment of a nursery assistant’s home. The assistant can care for between 2 and 4 children at any one time.
Accompanied by their assistant, children also visits the family nursery play area one to three times a week to enjoy the advantages of group childcare. The time in the play area is organised and supervised by early childhood educators.
The family nursery organises and coordinates the children’s care, in particular if the assistant is absent. It handles administrative management and billing tasks. It also provides both the assistants and the family with pedagogical support in supervising the children as well as training courses.
A multi-disciplinary team
The family nursery assistants are part of a family nursery and a team of childcare professionals, under the authority of the Director and Deputy Director of a sector, comprising early childhood educators and socio-educational assistants.
Age of the children accepted
This form of childcare is available to children from the end of their mother’s maternity leave until they go to school.
Opening times
The service is available Mondays to Fridays between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. The drop-off and pick-up times shall be agreed at registration and included in the childcare contract.

Responsible supervision
The family carers are authorised and inspected by the “Service d’autorisation de l’accueil de jour” (SASAJ – daycare authorisation service), which also conducts regular supervision visits. The carers are employed by the nurseries as family nursery assistants.
Training for assistants
The family nursery assistants attend regular continuing education courses provided by the nursery education teams and/or outside trainers. The aim of these courses is to make assistants aware of daily situations in a child’s life, for example:
- first aid techniques;
- nutrition;
- child development;
- peer interactions.
Family nursery service
The family nursery organises, coordinates and welcomes the children and their families. It performs all administrative management tasks linked to billing and provides the assistants with pedagogical monitoring.
