The City of Geneva has adopted a differentiated management approach to its parks and gardens, offering nature more time and space.
With general biodiversity in Switzerland diminishing at an alarming rate, the City of Geneva has adopted a differentiated management approach to its parks and gardens with a view to fostering the presence of nature in the city.
Differentiated maintenance means that individual urban parks and gardens can be managed using the method best suited to their ecological potential, cultural value and use.
Significant ecological benefits
In tangible terms, adopting a differentiated management approach offers a number of significant ecological benefits:
- improved biodiversity through more flower meadows;
- reduced water consumption (less watering);
- recycling of raw materials (production of compost or wood chips);
- generalisation of permeable ground, as in Parc des Bastions, which enables plants to absorb rainwater;
- planting of trees and shrubs adapted to the region.
