This page indicates which bulky objects the City of Geneva is willing to remove on your behalf. A simple telephone call or e-mail allows you to get rid of bulky household objects you no longer use, free of charge.
Which bulky objects can the street cleaning service take away?
Bulky objects include old furniture, mattresses, sports machines, carpets, kitchen tools, decorative accessories and any other object that can't be thrown away with household waste due to its large size.
The Street cleaning - Clean city department does not collect electrical or electronic goods or household appliances. You can take them:
- to a retailer of similar goods who is obliged to accept them (Decree of 14 January 1998 relating to the restitution, collection and disposal of electrical and electronic appliances (OREA));
- to a cantonal collection point (ESREC).
- waste from a commercial or industrial activity;
- the removal of the entire contents of apartments, cellars or attics;
- light fittings, special waste (paints, solvents, tyres, car batteries, etc.), clothes, shoes, documents, cardboard boxes, books or any objects which are an integral part of a building (doors, windows, tiling, parquet, sinks, wash basins, etc.).
How to get rid of bulky objects?
Free procedure online or by telephone
Any inhabitant who so desires can ask the Street cleaning – Clean city department to remove bulky household objects. This online or telephone procedure (freephone 0800 22 42 22) is free.
The street cleaning service will take a maximum of 7 objects per appointment. These objects must be left in the street in accordance with the directives of the street cleaning service, before 6.30 a.m. on the day we do our round. Only one appointment can be made per household every 7 days.
Senior citizens with reduced mobility who are sometimes unable to move a bulky object can now ask for assistance in moving the object to be removed. It should be noted that this assistance, provided on the good faith of the applicants, can only be arranged after making an appointment by telephone.
Precautions to be taken in the event of bed bugs
If your bulky objects are contaminated by bed bugs, we would ask you to notify the Street cleaning – Clean city department when making an appointment.
You will be provided with protective covers and warning stickers free of charge to be used for your protection as well as that of the neighbouring population and our staff. The equipment can be obtained from the offices of the street cleaning service at rue Francois-Dussaud 10, 1227 Les Acacias, from 7 a.m. to midday and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
To obtain more detailed information on this matter, please consult Bed bugs: website of the State of Geneva.

You can also ask charity associations to recover objects or furniture which you no longer need and that is still in good condition.
Unauthorised dumping is subject to a fine ranging from CHF 200 to CHF 400,000 depending on the offence (regulation relating to waste management LC 21 911). This fine is doubled for every repeat offence.
