This page provides useful information concerning sorting and recycling organic kitchen or garden waste in Geneva. It indicates the types of waste that can be recovered in the compostable bags provided for this purpose.
Organic waste is collected during door-to-door rounds and at all eco-points.
Organic waste collection days
The organic waste collection days are indicated in the street cleaning schedule.
Collection does not take place on the following public holidays:
- Good Friday and Easter Monday;
- Ascension Thursday;
- Whit Monday;
- National Day;
- Jeûne genevois;
- 25 December – Christmas Day;
- 1 January – New Year.
Collections will not be postponed.
Organic waste is divided into two types:
- organic kitchen waste;
- organic garden waste.
Organic kitchen waste
- peelings;
- leftover food (cooked or raw);
- bones;
- egg shells;
- faded flowers;
- coffee grounds (with or without filter);
- tea leaves (with or without the bag);
- indoor plants.

Packaging and collection points
This waste must be packaged in compostable bags then placed in plastic containers with wheels (maximum 140 litres) or left at an eco-point. Restaurant left-overs, cat litter and opaque green plastic bags are not accepted.
Organic garden waste
- brushwood;
- wood;
- mown grass.

This waste must be packaged in compostable bags then placed in plastic containers with wheels (maximum 800 litres). Waste from garden maintenance businesses is not accepted.
