From the end of November to the start of the following January, the Christmas illuminations brighten up the streets of Geneva city centre.
To make the City of Geneva even more attractive during the end-of-year festivities, more than half a million LED lights are installed in the trees, candelabras and public lighting cables. The Logistics and Events Department of the City of Geneva provides its technical know-how and plays an active role in designing and installing all this equipment.
In addition to the illuminations, locals and visitors can enjoy Geneva Lux, a festival of lights which complements the illuminations with contemporary works of light art designed by international artists in accordance with their location.
Sustainable development
The Christmas illuminations respect the principles of sustainable development so important to the City of Geneva:
- The power consumed during this period is only about 32,000 kWh, accounting for only 0.4% of consumption generated by the City of Geneva’s public lighting system.
- The energy provided for the illuminations by the Geneva’s utilities services is exclusively “Vitale Vert”. It is drawn from hydropower and new forms of renewable energy generated by photovoltaic and biomass facilities.
- On Place du Molard, the majestic Christmas tree also boasts environmentally-friendly decorations: since 2010, the electricity consumption of the tree’s decorations has been reduced tenfold.
