Spring events

Semaine de l’égalité | March

Every year, alongside International Women’s Day, the City of Geneva organises the Semaine de l’égalité with the aim of taking an original look at a specific theme by exploring it from the standpoint of gender and equality between men and women.

Semaine d’actions contre le racisme | March

Every year in March, the City of Geneva participates in the Semaine d’actions contre le racisme to make the general public aware of discrimination linked to a person's place of origin.

Festival Voix de fête | March

Devoted to French-language songs, the Festival Voix de Fête (in French) hosts concerts in several venues around Geneva performed by a new generation of French, Swiss and African artists.

International film festival and forum on human rights (FIFDH) | March

A very popular Geneva film festival, the FIFDH is held every year opposite the UN Human Rights Council, providing a platform for anyone committed to defending human values.

European Artistic Crafts Day | end of March – beginning of April

Every year since 2013, the City of Geneva has implemented a poster campaign accompanying the Journée internationale de lutte contre l’homophobie et la transphobie to raise the awareness of the citizens of Geneva while promoting the work of the associations.

Week-end en fanfare | end of May

During the Week-end en fanfare, the Union Genevoise des Musiques et Chorales organises free concerts on Place du Molard and in the Victoria Hall.

La ville est à vous | May, June, September, October

La ville est à vous is a chance to reclaim public areas by transforming each district into a festive and friendly meeting place during the course of a weekend.

Nuit des musées | end of May

During the Nuit des musées (in French), the museums of Geneva open their doors with an original programme of night-time events. On the Sunday, the festivities continue with International Museum Day.

Fête de la musique | June

For three days around the summer solstice, all kinds of music echoe through the streets and across the squares to celebrate the Fête de la musique.

Musique en été | July, August

Jazz, classical, chamber opera or contemporary … The Musiques en été (in French) event makes for lively summer evenings in the stunning settings of the courtyard of the Hôtel de Ville and the Parc La Grange.

Ciné transat | July, August

Every summer, CinéTransat (in French) sets out its deckchairs in the magnificent setting of the Perle du Lac. The programme includes free screenings of great films under the stars, giant karaokes, themed evenings and short films.

Fête nationale on 1 August | August

Every year on the day of the Fête nationale, the public enjoys an original entertainment programme designed for all ages along with a number of surprises to celebrate 1 August in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Autumn events

Semaine du goût | September

Every year in September, the City of Geneva participates in the Semaine du Goût, inviting cafés and restaurants to serve home-made dishes made from local, seasonal products.

Journées européennes du patrimoine | September

Every year in September, the Journées européennes du patrimoine offer you a unique opportunity to visit monuments or historical sites that are usually inaccessible to the general public. Focusing on a specific theme chosen by each country, they provide heritage professionals with the chance to present their work in person to the visitors while also incorporating activities for younger visitors.

Journée internationale des personnes âgées | October

Every year on 1 October, the City of Geneva is involved in the Journée internationale des personnes âgées during which a series of events is organised for every generation, focusing on a specific theme.

Welcome ceremony for new inhabitants | October

Every year, the City of Geneva organises a welcome ceremony for all the people newly arrived in the city.

Journée de jeux en famille | November

Every year in November, the Journée de jeux en famille is an opportunity to enjoy a festive and convivial day focusing on games of every shape, size and colour – entirely free of charge.

Fête de la glace | November

The Fête de la glace is an event devoted to sports practised on an ice rink. It is held simultaneously in Geneva, at les Vernets ice rink, and in twenty different towns throughout Ticino and western Switzerland.

Geneva International Film Festival (GIFF) | November

At the crossroads of genres and disciplines, the Geneva International Film Festival (GIFF) explores the interactions between cinema, television and the digital world, offering nine days of experiences focusing on image, sound and new forms of narration.

Festival les Créatives | November

Founded in 2005, the resolutely multidisciplinary Les Créatives festival (in French) showcases the work of independent female artists who stand out through their work and commitment dedicated to women’s rights.

La fureur de lire | end of November

Organised every two years, the four-day La Fureur de lire (in French) festival offers a rich mosaic of activities focusing on books and literature.

Winter events

Geneva Lux Festival | December, January

Since 2014, the Geneva Lux Festival, organised in the public areas of the city centre, has presented works of art made of light, created and staged specifically for Geneva by artists from Switzerland and abroad.

Marché de Noël des enfants | December

Every year at the beginning of December, the Parc des Bastions hosts a Christmas market organised by and for children.

Fête de l’Escalade | 12 December

A sort of carnival in Geneva, the Fête de l’Escalade is a mixture of tradition, humour and official commemoration. Costumes, chocolate pots and renditions of the Cé qu'è lainô are all part of this festival that brings the different generations together.

New Year’s Eve and the Réveillon de la solidarité | 31 December

The City of Geneva invites the population to welcome the New Year together. The programme generally includes concerts and firework displays in public areas. At the same time, the Plainpalais community centre hosts the Réveillon de la solidarité, offering deprived or lonely people a little light and warmth.

Black Movie Festival | January

For ten days at the start of every year, the Black Movie film festival serves up a selection of films by acknowledged or emerging talents from all backgrounds around the world, firmly rooted in the contemporary world. One section of the festival is dedicated to young viewers: the Petit Black Movie.

Antigel Festival | January

A singular event in Geneva’s cultural landscape, the Antigel Festival (in French) brings the end of the lake to life with its famous guests and eclectic programme held in unusual places! Its transient performances combining music, dance and performance art, its evenings, celebrations and sports sessions are becoming increasingly popular.

Promotions citoyennes | February

Every year, the Promotions citoyennes are organised in honour of the young people living in the canton who have reached the age of adulthood. Testimonies from well-known personalities, reflections on civic commitment and a surprise show are part of the programme.

Presentation of the Martin Ennals Award | October

The annual presentation of the Martin Ennals Award to a person who actively defends human rights helps to make the general public aware of the all too numerous attacks suffered by civilians in times of war, political prisoners and other victims of injustice.
