The Geneva section of the Swiss Human Rights League is a staunch advocate of the right of asylum and the rights of persons without any legal status. Tirelessly fighting racism, the anti-Semitism and all forms of discrimination, it defends political, economic, social, environmental and cultural rights.

Having defended the rights of the Roma community, it has turned its attention in recent years to the issue of the deprivation of liberty. In particular, it condemns administrative detention as a response to the desperation of migration.

While 2023 sees the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 30th anniversary of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, the League will celebrate its 95th anniversary in December. Set against an extremely tense political backdrop and the mayoral year that Mr Alfonso Gomez was keen to dedicate to the issue of human rights, this choice of recipient of the “Genève reconnaissante” medal pays tribute to everyone who voluntarily devotes their time and energy to advance the cause of human rights.

“This award, which pays tribute to individuals or groups who contribute to enhancing the reputation of Geneva and defending its values, acknowledges the 350 current volunteers and the thousands of others who have worked relentlessly to promote and defend the City of Geneva’s values of openness and tolerance, honouring its reputation as the capital of human rights. These people, whose commitment is fundamental to the cause, will remain firmly rooted in the city’s memory,” explains Mr Gomez.
