Les stands du marché du quartier des Grottes - St Gervais

The City of Geneva supports 27 weekly markets organised in the different districts within the municipality.

No fewer than ten sites host retail markets, in particular selling fruit and vegetables as well as numerous other food products.

The manufactured goods markets are primarily held on the Place de la Madeleine and, on Sundays, on the Plainpalais plain.

The Plainpalais plain also hosts one of the largest flea markets in Switzerland.

The region’s craftsmen sell their products on the Place de la Fusterie on Thursdays.

The City of Geneva also boasts a number of specialist markets:

  • la Fusterie book market;
  • the arts and crafts Christmas market held 15 days before Christmas;
  • the Christmas tree market held 15 days before Christmas.

Publication

In 2010, the City of Geneva supported the publication of a book entitled Genève et ses marchés, which presents the anecdotes and characters of the different markets in the City Geneva. Containing superb photos by Olivier Vogelsang and humorous texts by Jérôme Estèbe, the book was published by les éditions Glénat and can be ordered from bookstores.
