This procedure enables you to obtain an identity card.

Who is this procedure intended for?

This procedure is intended for all Swiss citizens resident within the territory of the City of Geneva.

Applications for passports and simultaneous applications for passports and identity cards must be made to the Cantonal Office of Passports and Nationality.

What are the prices and validity of identity cards?

  • Adults: CHF 70 including postage, valid for 10 years;
  • Minors up to the age of 18: CHF 35 including postage, valid for 5 years.

These amounts must be paid upon application.
Payment accepted: cash, Maestro or Postcard.

Which documents must be presented?

For adults:

  • old identity card (if lost or stolen, a certificate of loss or theft issued by a Swiss police authority);
  • a recent passport photo (3.5 x 4.5 cm), good quality, colour or black and white (photo booth available);
  • people under guardianship who are not accompanied by their legal guardian must provide written authorisation from the latter together with a copy of the guardian’s identity document.

For minors (the minor must be present):

  • old identity document, where applicable;
  • If the parents are married and reside at the same address, the presence of one of the parents is sufficient. They must bring their identity document with them.
  • If the parents are married but reside at different addresses, the presence of both parents, with their identity cards, is required; if only one parent is present, they must present their identity document and the proxy for the other parent together with a copy of the other parent’s identity document.
  • If one parent exercises exclusive parental authority (parents are divorced or legally/effectively separated or single parent), the latter must produce the ruling granting sole parental authority together with their identity document.
  • If the parents are divorced and exercise joint parental authority, the presence of both parents, with their identity cards, is required; if only one parent is present, they must present their identity document, the ruling relating to parental authority and the proxy for the other parent together with a copy of the other parent’s identity document.
  • If the parents are not married but exercise joint parental authority and live together, the presence of one parent is sufficient. The parent in question must present their identity document and the ruling assigning parental authority.
  • If the parents are not married, live separately but exercise joint parental authority, the presence of both parents, with their identity cards, is required; if only one parent is present, they must present their identity document, the ruling relating to parental authority and the proxy for the other parent together with a copy of the other parent’s identity document.

How long will the procedure take?

The documents are sent to the applicant’s home by registered post (P.O. Box not accepted) within 2 weeks.
