Due to the health crisis and the measures recently announced by the Federal Council with regard to events hosting more than 1,000 people, the City of Geneva has decided to cancel the New Year’s Eve Party 2020.
At present, in light of the rapid evolution of the health situation and the major uncertainties concerning the coming months, in particular in relation to the necessary health measures, the City feels that it has no option but to cancel the 2020 edition of the New Year’s Eve Party. The conditions relating to large-scale gatherings are unfavourable as the end of the year approaches.
Against this backdrop, it is therefore impossible to organise such a large-scale event bringing together tens of thousands of participants and involving concerts, refreshments stands, entertainment and other stands.
On the one hand, it would be impossible to ensure compliance with the protective gestures (wearing masks, social distancing) while on the other hand, the measures currently imposed (groups of 100 people, tracing participants, seated public) are impossible to implement on this scale in a public area.
The City of Geneva would like to thank its loyal partners involved in organising this popular event, and in particular the Fairmont Hotel which traditionally organises the firework display.
