After the Musée des Beaux-Arts du Locle, press cartoonist Patrick Chappatte is setting up stall in le Commun to present his exhibition focussing on the power of political caricature.
From 17 December, the famous press cartoonist Patrick Chappatte is inaugurating his exhibition focussing on the power of political caricature.
Press illustrations
Nowadays, at the beginning of the 21st century, press illustrations crystallise numerous questions: can we joke about everything and with everyone? Can we tolerate everything in the name of freedom of expression? Defending political satire against an increasingly tense global backdrop gives rise to debate, even in western democracies. Cartoonists are agitators who help raise awareness of different issues. As early as the 19th century, the fight for a free press was also fought with illustrators pencils.
The exhibition
The exhibition is jointly produced by the City of Geneva, the Musée des beaux-arts du Locle and the Freedom Cartoonists Foundation. Presented at the Musée des beaux-arts du Locle in 2020, it was reworked following the events of 2020 and 2021 and extended to include a section devoted to the cartoonist Hani Abbas. It also presents a circuit with polemical works by several cartoonists as well as an area focussing on the issue of Covid in the press. The exhibition was designed by Chappatte. Eric Burnand, journalist and comic book author, took responsibility for finding and writing the texts.
