Matthias Goerne is an incomparable singer of Lieder. Known the world over for his warm timbre, legato and depth of artistry, his interpretations exude emotion like a quiet force.
And it takes that gentleness to take us into such painful territory as the death of children. He wanted to bring his voice to bear, selecting from his favourite repertoire the Lieder that deal with this theme: that of the disappearance of what should not disappear, of the light that is extinguished too soon. When the music gets involved, sometimes tenderness wins out over despair.
