CHF 2.16 million loan to install new public paths at the foot of the Jet d'eau.

The Executive Council will propose that the Municipal Council grant a loan of CHF 1,160,800 to create temporary floating bathing facility for five years at the corner between the jetty by the Jet d'eau and quai Gustave Ador, on the downstream side.

The purpose of the loan application is to propose a temporary project for five years that will allow residents to reclaim spaces already freed up in the area in anticipation of an overall reordering with leisure zone and permanent bathing.

Taking its inspiration from the "Badis" in Zurich, the new area will provide secure and supervised bathing and be accessible to people with reduced mobility.

The bathing area is roughly 30m wide and 36m long and could offer several pools for sporting and family swimmers. There will also be refreshments and a leisure zone to keep the site lively, with showers, changing rooms, toilets and lockers. Everything will be dismantled and put into storage for the winter. The running costs (supervision, cleaning) will be covered by the Department of Security and Sport (DSSP).

The space for the future bathing facility has been designed in collaboration with the Canton and will increase the attractiveness of the site while also offering residents a further place to bathe in addition to the beaches at Eaux-Vives and Baby.

Environmental impact

The choice of materials, execution of the works and re-use of existing materials will all reflect current environmental concerns.

The design will consist of floating cubes of low-density polyethylene, a totally inert material; no environmentally polluting components will be used to manufacture the modular floating cubes. The low-density polyethylene is also 100% recyclable. To ensure buoyancy, no non-recyclable materials will be used. Likewise, no items or components treated with chemical pollutants will form part of the construction of the floating cubes. Because of the exceptional quality of the site, a high-quality solution with an imitation wood laminate surface will be used to ensure everything fits with the landscape.

The application falls under motion M-1504: "To ensure greater cooling in summer: let's create floating public baths at the foot of the Jet d'eau!" while waiting for a permanent project to be designed.
