Extreme heat: the City of Geneva activates its heatwave plan

The heatwave warning issued by the cantonal medical services has triggered the City of Geneva's heatwave plan. People registered to benefit from individual monitoring by the Social Service during periods of extreme heat are contacted on a daily basis, including at the weekend.

According to the forecast of the Swiss weather service, this heatwave episode in the Geneva basin will continue until Wednesday 23 August. As reiterated by the cantonal medical service, high temperatures represent a significant danger to well-being and health, in particular along older people. During periods of extreme heat, certain precautions must be taken, in particular drinking plenty of water.

The specific support provided by the Social Service staff involves a daily phone call to anyone registered to ensure they are in good health. It is an effective tool for identifying situations of isolation. If any symptoms are detected, the relevant healthcare services take over. The City's heatwave plan is thus founded on collaboration with the Canton, and in particular with imad, various municipal services and Pharma Genève.

Furthermore, the Social Service teams do rounds to pass on prevention messages, deliver drinks and provide assistance to people living on the street.

Cinema, swilling pool and cool locations

For the first time this year, the City of Geneva is providing new services free of charge to help senior citizens cope with these particularly high temperatures. Older people living in the municipality can make free use of Varembé swimming pool in the morning. During the afternoon, they can enjoy the cool, refreshing atmosphere in the different cinemas (Scala, Nord-Sud et City) while watching the films free of charge until 6 p.m.

What's more, the Geneva Museum of Ethnography will open its doors wide offering both a cool location and the support of professionals.

The cafeteria on the first floor of the Résidence Fort-Barreau, in the Grottes district, is easily accessible from 10am to 5:30pm to all those who want to relax in an air-conditioned setting.
