The Grand Théâtre de Genève kicks off its new season with works and creations that modernise opera and ballet.
Power games and contemporary art
One of the aims of the Grand Théâtre de Genève is to modernise opera and ballet by bringing them into the present day, with a theme that is particularly topical: power games. Power, whether political or more intimate, is a common thread running through all the works presented in the new season.
The programme includes operas such as Don Carlos, as well as a world première, Justice, which is being staged for the first time in early 2024. “The Grand Théâtre aims to host operas and ballets that reflect our world today. With what we are going through at the moment, I believe that the theme of power is highly relevant,” says Aviel Cahn, the institution’s director.
Visual and contemporary artists are being invited to take a sideways look at opera and ballet and to forge a link between them. Creatives such as Marina Abramović, who is responsible for the concept and set design for Ravel’s famous Bolero ballet. Other key figures on the international art scene include Adel Abdessemed for Saint François d’Assise, and Anthony Gormley for the scenography of Noetic.
