A place of life, culture and, needless to say, theatre, the Comédie de Genève is officially opening its doors on 28 and 29 August. The open days will be an opportunity to introduce everyone to the new building which has arisen on this exceptional site since 2017, and to the 21-22 season programmed by co-directors Natacha Koutchoumov and Denis Maillefer.
The building
The Comédie building creates an imposing silhouette in concrete, glass and metal on the pedestrian esplanade at the heart of the new urban quarter at Genève-Eaux-Vives station. The new theatre stands for powerful, contemporary and iconic architecture.
With two stages (a proscenium arch with 500 seats and a flexible one with 200 seats), scenery and costume workshops, rehearsal rooms, offices and public spaces (box office, restaurant, foyer), it is designed as a place for putting on spectacles.
The opening is in character with the project, which was designed by the FRES architectes in Paris. This is particularly apparent in the two large glass façades at the front and back of the theatre, and the building’s crenellated profile giving glimpses of the surrounding district. When night falls, the illuminated façade on esplanade Alice-Bailly invites passers-by in to the show.
“It’s a theatre in the city and a city in the theatre.”
