Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36
Composed during a rather difficult period, Reflections, by our composer in residence Michael Jarrell, is imbued with the friendship he felt towards the musician and composer Eric Daubresse to whose memory this piano concerto is dedicated. Commissioned by the OSR and the Philharmonic of Radio France, it will be defended by the pianist Bertrand Chamayou whose musical intelligence and high technicality also guided the inspiration of the Geneva composer. A great purity reigns over this deeply expressive work as illuminated from within. Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 also evokes the inevitability of fate. Often called the “Symphony of Fatum”, it expresses the annoyances of human life in a resolutely autobiographical dramatic tone. The concert will open with two Gymnopédies by Erik Satie finely orchestrated by Claude Debussy. Beyond their scholarly title, these two famous pieces with their ambiguous harmony are full of mystery and languorous sensuality.
