The question of war has long been a blind spot in studies of Jean-Jacques Rousseau. All that was known of him on this subject were a few isolated passages and scattered fragments of drafts.
In 2008, Bruno Bernardi and Gabriella Silvestrini, after a meticulous exploration of the manuscripts held in the libraries of Geneva and Neuchâtel, were able to reconstruct the coherent first draft of a work that Rousseau had evoked in his project entitled Principes du droit de la guerre (Principles of the Law of War).
The reconstitution of this text has enabled a new approach to Rousseau's thinking on the question of war and the place it occupies in his work.
Before Bruno Bernardi looks in detail at the adventure of reconstructing the Principles of the Law of War, Fabrice Brandli outlines the particular historical context in which this text was written in the 18th century. At the time, the very nature of war was undergoing major mutations with the Seven Years' War, evolving towards modern, globalized forms that resonate today with our contemporary conflicts.
