Conference - Meeting
physical venue
The question of war has long been a blind spot in studies of Jean-Jacques Rousseau. All that was known of him on this subject were a few isolated passages and scattered fragments of drafts.
In 2008, Bruno Bernardi and Gabriella Silvestrini, after a meticulous exploration of the manuscripts held in the libraries of Geneva and Neuchâtel, were able to reconstruct the coherent first draft of a work that Rousseau had evoked in his project entitled Principes du droit de la guerre (Principles of the Law of War).
The reconstitution of this text has enabled a new approach to Rousseau's thinking on the question of war and the place it occupies in his work.
In this second session, Bruno Bernardi uses key passages from the Principles of the Law of War to comment on certain key concepts in this work, such as the body politic, mixed government and the general will, as well as the notions of war and the state of war.
