The Villa La Grange hosted the meeting between the Russian and American presidents on Wednesday 16 June, once again confirming the major role played by both Switzerland and International Geneva on the global diplomatic stage. This meeting is yet another example of a long tradition of Swiss hospitality.
Nestling in a magnificent location in the middle of one of Geneva’s most attractive parks, the Villa La Grange hosted the meeting between the Russian and American presidents on Wednesday 16 June, some 36 years after another historic meeting took place in Geneva between the American President and the leader of the Soviet Union.
Thirty years before that, in 1955, Geneva hosted the historic meeting between the so-called “Big Four”. For the first time since 1945, the victors of the Second World War – the United States, the USSR, France and Great Britain – agreed to meet in Geneva under the aegis of the United Nations to discuss the key issues of peace and security.
The role of International Geneva
Since the foundation of the Red Cross in 1863, International Geneva has developed a long tradition of hosting international and non-governmental organisations as well as academic, civil society and private sector institutions. Today, it is home to 42 international organisations, the permanent representations of 177 member states of the UN and about 750 NGOs.
As the site of the European headquarters of the United Nations, Geneva is the operational heart of the multilateral system and the most active centre of global governance: every year, it hosts more than 3,400 meetings, 182,000 delegates from around the world and some 4,800 visits from heads of state and government, ministers and other dignitaries.
In a world facing a multitude of challenges, not a day goes by without key decisions being taken in Geneva in every domain and in particular with regard to health, climate change, human rights, digital transformation, armed conflict and refugees.
